GalleryPal Design Sprint

Challenge

There people who are interested in art and enjoy visiting museums that feel like their experience is being held back because of not knowing enough about the artist or artwork they are viewing. GalleryPal wants to revamp their guided tour to fully optimize the users experience.

Challenge

Lighting Demos

Here I have found some similar apps that implement some sort of self-guided tours within their system. After collecting data and performing some research I was able to quickly find some pain points that user's had with guided tours.

Key takeaways

  • Users are consistent in asking for a self-guided tour.
  • Some users would like to tour and learn at their own pace, which is hard to accomplish when touring with a group.
  • Overloading tourist minds with loads of information can be a headache. A summary of the most important information in regards of the artwork would be ideal.
  • A platform where museum events and news can be posted and pushed out to tourist would be great for people who constantly like to tour museums and hear about the last news.

Solution

My solution is a self guided tour through mobile devices. Users would be given the opportunity to view and learn at their own pace while having just the right amount of information about an artist and the artwork to leave feeling like they learned something new. I plan to put this system in a social media like platform that will allow users to hear about the latest news regarding exhibitions and museum events. Users can find museums online to attend or share their thoughts with other like-minded individuals. The goal would be to help fill that gap of knowledge to help users be more knowledgeable and interested in the artist and artwork.

My role as designer

My Role as UX/UI designer during this design sprint was to analyze problems that GalleryPal has faced while also seeking solution’s that meets the core goal of what GalleryPal wants to be for their users in assurance that I optimize the best experience possible for end users.

End to end user map

I want to layout the typical task a user will fulfill when registering with Gallerypal. This is to visualize and understand the entire experience a user has with the product.

Step 1 - Download/register within the app

Step 2 - Find/Select specific Museum

Step 3 - Select specific self guided tour

Step 4 - Experience self guided tour while being provided information at their own pace

Crazy 8 Exercise & Three panel Story Board

As I proceeded with my solutions from earlier. I sketch the process of attending and touring a museum for GalleryPal.

User testing

After completing a few exercises and sketches I gathered some screens and conducted some usability testing gain insights on some of the solution I brought to the table.

High fidelity wire frames

when developing my high fidelity wire frames I wanted to make sure to implement some key features that would fully optimize Gallerypals tour guide. First was to add an option to complete a self-guided tour so people can learn and venture at their own pace. This feature also utilizes the option to consume the information by audio or by transcripts. Finally I formed that information by only relaying critical insight on the specific artist and artwork so that it does not overwhelm the user.

Case study conclusion

Improving the experience for museums and exhibition lovers was quite the challenge. I found that I could overcome that challenge by creating the option of taking group guided and self guided tours. Iterative user research and prototyping led to a final product that showed an increase interest and liking to new tour guided options with informative information keeping users returning to the GalleryPal application. I am currently still monitoring feedback from users and improving accessibility and interaction elements based on user feedback and analytics.
